That Ain’t No Couture
Today I was looking at Indian designer clothing online with my mom and was appalled to see almost every one use the term “haute couture” or just “couture” to describe their collections.
Anyone who knows anything about fashion and design knows that you don’t just throw the word couture around.
To even use the term haute couture to describe your work, you have to be a member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. What does that mean? Well your work has to be made in France, by the French, and it must meet certain standards. You can be a foreign member but you have to apply and be accepted.
So ironic: in attempting to make their work seem better than it is, designers completely destroy their own credibility.
